Moth Control

Moths are winged insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera, with approximately 2,500 species found in the UK. While most are harmless, certain species can become pests, causing damage to textiles and stored food products.

Common Pest Moth Species

  1. Common Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella):

    • Appearance: Small, about 6-8 mm in length, with a wingspan of 9-16 mm. They have pale, golden-buff coloured forewings without markings.
    • Biology and Behaviour: Females lay up to 200 eggs on natural fibres like wool, fur, and feathers. The larvae feed on these materials, creating irregular holes.
  2. Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella):

    • Appearance: Approximately 8-10 mm long, with a wingspan of 16-20 mm. Forewings are reddish-brown with a coppery sheen on the outer half and whitish-grey on the inner half.
    • Biology and Behaviour: Infests stored food products such as grains, nuts, and dried fruits. Larvae spin silken webs, contaminating food sources.
  3. White-Shouldered House Moth (Endrosis sarcitrella):

    • Appearance: Measures about 6-10 mm in length, with a wingspan of 10-23 mm. They have white heads and mottled brownish-grey forewings with a distinctive white ‘shoulder’ near the head.
    • Biology and Behaviour: Larvae feed on a variety of materials, including textiles and food debris, but are less damaging than clothes moths.

Signs of Moth Infestation

  • Damage to Fabrics: Irregular holes in clothing, carpets, or upholstery, particularly those made from natural fibres.
  • Presence of Larvae: Small, creamy-white caterpillars found on affected materials.
  • Silken Cases or Webbing: Silk-like tubes or patches on fabrics or food products, indicating larval activity.
  • Adult Moths: Sightings of adult moths, especially in dimly lit areas like wardrobes or pantries.

Preventive Measures

  • Regular Cleaning: Vacuum carpets, upholstery, and curtains frequently to remove eggs and larvae.
  • Proper Storage: Store clothes in sealed bags and keep food in airtight containers to prevent access.
  • Reduce Clutter: Minimize accumulation of unused textiles and food products that can serve as breeding grounds.

Control Methods

  • Traps: Use pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult moth populations.
  • Insecticides: MSE Pest Control can apply these to combat an infestation

By implementing these strategies, you can effectively manage and prevent moth infestations in your home or business.
