Wasps
Spring is when queen wasps emerge and begin building new nests as the temperature warms. By the summer, wasp nests are working nonstop, producing up to 300 eggs day and up to 5,000 adults to feed grubs and construct the nest.
You are most likely to encounter (Vespula vulgaris) & German Wasps (Vespula germanica)in the UK. Both species have striped yellow and black bodies and severe, potentially allergic stings.
Wasps are one of the most dreaded and possibly violent pests in Britain and are infamous for their painful stings and unprovoked attacks.
Wasps actually rarely attack people; they only do so when they feel threatened. The issue is that when a social wasp is in trouble, it releases a pheromone that causes colony members nearby to go into a defensive, stinging frenzy.
Wasp stings are at best painful, and at worst fatal.
If you’re sensitive to wasp stings then they can send you into anaphylaxis – a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.
